But: These scenarios are rare, which is why rental market doesn’t exist.

Third-Party Equipment Rental Companies

Checked major rental companies (USA):

  • United Rentals: No reflectance standards
  • Sunbelt Rentals: No reflectance standards
  • ATEC (rental): No reflectance standards
  • Rentec: No reflectance standards

Why they don’t stock them:

  • Low demand (most customers purchase)
  • Requires specialized recalibration (unlike general tools)
  • High value-to-size ratio (theft/damage risk)

Specialty optical equipment rental:

  • Some companies rent spectrophotometers, colorimeters
  • But: Don’t include calibration targets (users expected to own)

International Differences

Europe:

  • Similar to USA (rental uncommon)
  • Some calibration labs offer mobile service (brings targets to you)

China:

  • Rental market slightly more developed (equipment sharing common)
  • But: Still uncommon for precision calibration equipment

Best option (all regions): Purchase, as rental infrastructure doesn’t exist

Recommendation

If you need targets for <2 weeks:

  • Check: Supplier demo/evaluation programs ✓
  • Calibvision: 2-week evaluation with refundable deposit

If you need targets for 1-3 months:

  • Purchase is cheaper than rental (even if rental were available)
  • Sell used equipment after project (recoup 30-50% of cost)

If you need targets for >3 months:

  • Purchase is obviously better (rental would cost 2-3× more)

If budget is the constraint:

  • Consider: Financing (spread payments over time)
  • Consider: Shared equipment (split cost with other projects/labs)
  • Consider: Start with minimal set (1 target), expand later

Bottom line: Plan to purchase targets. Rental is not a viable option for reflectance standards (market doesn’t exist).
